2019 ASICP Trainee Competition

2019 CCSCN-ASICP Trainee Research Competition (Oral) - CALL FOR ABSTRACTS 

This competition is designed to advance the Critical Care SCN’s long-term research goals,

1. To increase capacity for scientific work within the Alberta critical care community,

2. To enhance the culture of science and innovation within the Alberta critical care community,

3. To improve the health and health care delivered to critically ill patients through knowledge creation and knowledge translation.


Details of the Competition

Deadline: Friday November 23, 2018 by 1600hrs MST

Eligible Topics: Scientific work addressing biomedical, clinical, health services, population health, quality improvement or education questions.

Eligible Trainees: Trainees enrolled in clinical (e.g., residents, fellows), undergraduate (e.g., summer students, honours thesis projects), graduate (e.g., MSc, PhD) or post-graduate (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, clinical scholars) training programs AND members or supervised by members of the Alberta Society of Intensive Care Medicine or the Critical Care Strategic Clinical Network.

Instructions: Maximum one page abstract with minimum of 1cm margins & 12 font text. Abstracts must conform to the following organization.

Background: Should describe the context and importance of the study and state the objective(s) of the study.

Methods: Should include a description of the methods used including study design, setting, population, measures, and analytic procedures.

Results: Should describe the results in sufficient detail to support the conclusions. Tabular or graphic results are acceptable. It is not satisfactory to state, "The results will be discussed" or "Other data will be presented”.

Conclusions: Should state the implications of the findings for clinical practice, research, education, or policy.

Oral Presentation Details

Notification of Presentation: Abstracts will be adjudicated by a scientific committee and the top ranked abstracts selected for presentation. Trainees will be notified by Thursday December 20, 2018.

Presentation Date: Morning of Saturday January 19, 2019

Presentation Format: 10 minute presentation followed by 2 minutes for questions.

Awards: $500 first place award and $250 second place award will be presented to the top two trainee presentations.

Acknowledgements: This competition has been sponsored by the Alberta Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Critical Care Strategic Clinical Network, Alberta Health Services.

Competition Policies: There will be two winners. The award money could be used to cover the costs of attending the meeting (if the trainee has not had it covered another way) or to cover the costs of any other academic pursuit related to critical care (ideally related to the actual abstract - presentation at a national/international meeting, open access publication etc.). Other eligible uses of the money include: membership fees to relevant professional organizations, purchase of textbooks, journal subscriptions.
